The Spirit of Comradery

The dining hall doors swung open to reveal what could only be described as controlled chaos. The Butcher had outdone himself, filling the massive table with an elaborate feast that somehow managed to look both elegant and slightly threatening. Roasted meat glistened under the chandelier's warm light, surrounded by perfectly arranged vegetables and sauces steaming with aromatic herbs.

General Tiberius stood near the head of the table, flanked by two scarecrows in what Silas could only assume was their version of dress uniform, with slightly less dirt and fewer visible weapons.

Diog went and claimed a spot near the fireplace, gnawing contentedly on what looked like an entire ham bone the Butcher had set aside specifically for him.

The brownies had arranged themselves along the table's edge like a tiny honor guard, each holding thimble-sized cups that they raised in salute as Silas entered.

But it was the fountain in the center of the room that drew his attention.

Nerissa had manifested within a very large and what appeared to be a massive fruit punch bowl. Bits of orange and cherry floated through her translucent body, and she swayed with a rhythm that had nothing to do with her usual graceful movements.

"Silas!" she shouted, her voice carrying a distinct slur. "You won! You totally won the thing!"

"The tournament," Bonereghard supplied helpfully. "She's been celebrating since word arrived of your victory."

Nerissa's watery form wobbled as she turned toward Lana. "And you! The girlfriend! The pretty one with the important job!"

Lana blinked, clearly taken aback. "I'm... thank you?"

"No, no, no," Nerissa hiccupped, sending ripples through the punch bowl. "You don't understand. Silas is like, the best. The absolute best. You have no idea how good."

Silas felt heat rise in his cheeks. "Nerissa, maybe you should…"

"He's so good, a good man!!" she interrupted, wobbling enthusiastically. "Not like the bad man. The grandfather kept trying to make me wear thingsit. Just flowers because I mentioned I liked them!"

Dale coughed into his wine glass, clearly trying not to laugh.

Nerissa continued, her liquid form becoming increasingly animated. "And he asks! He actually asks before he does things! Like, 'Hey Nerissa, is it okay if I use the bath?' or 'Hey Nerissa, would you mind helping with the water pressure?' Not like that perverted old man who just…"

"Nerissa," Bonereghard interrupted smoothly, "perhaps we should focus on the celebration?"

But the water nymph was on a roll, turning her attention fully to Lana with the single-minded determination of the thoroughly intoxicated.

"He listens!" she declared, gesticulating with tendrils of punch-infused water. "When I told him about the creepy grandfather trying to spy on me in the bath, he got all protective and angry. But not angry at me! Angry for me! Do you know how rare that is?"

Lana glanced at Silas, who was now seriously considering hiding under the table.

"And he's honest!" Nerissa continued, apparently just getting started. "Like, brutally honest. When I asked if my new fountain display was too much, he said yes, but in a nice way. Most guys would just lie and say it looked great even if it was terrible.
